A Calgary criminal defence lawyer has launched a clothing campaign to raise awareness about the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Kaysi Fagan, the founder of 10(b) Collective, aims to spark discussions about the Charter and empower individuals to understand their rights, thereby reducing the risk of injustice.

Fagan emphasizes the vulnerability of both innocent and guilty individuals when encountering law enforcement, highlighting that knowing our rights is a crucial defence against potential abuse of power. Despite the significance of the Charter, many Canadians do not fully grasp its importance in safeguarding their rights.

The collection, recently introduced by Fagan, draws from her extensive experience in litigation, teaching Advanced Criminal Law at the University of Calgary, and being a member of the Law Society of Alberta for over 13 years. The logo of the 10(b) Collective represents Section 10(b) of the Charter, which guarantees the right to counsel.

Fagan stresses that a considerable number of wrongful convictions stem from false confessions, often due to a lack of awareness about 10(b) rights. The 10(b) Collective aims to educate and engage Canadians about their rights and freedoms, with a portion of the proceeds supporting non-profit organizations dedicated to civil liberties expansion and the exoneration of wrongfully convicted individuals in Canada, such as The Innocence Project.
