Rising R&B-fusion/dancehall sensation, Omega Mighty, shares her sophomore album, Notorious & Noble, will be released on October 6, and reveals another taste of the new music with Poblano. Listen here.
Diving into themes of love and relationships, exclusion, racism and female-empowerment, the nine track record explores the intersectionalities of the Black experience, as noble Kings and Queens and the contrary, often attributed, “notorious” stereotype. Grounded in R&B-dancehall and afrobeats, Mighty effortlessly blends in elements of roots reggae, hip-hop and reggaeton, pushing the boundaries of popular music through the lens of island-inspired sound.
“I really want to promote the unseen, unheard and disrupt the status quo of popular styles of music by showing that mainstream music can be multi-genre, it can have powerful messaging and it can be heavily influenced by culture,” says Mighty.
“I can’t wait for people to get to experience this project in its entirety," she continues. "My goal was to collaborate with other powerful Black women and women of colour, to help drive the message. It’s almost a 'holistic' approach, if you will, to share the lived experiences of Black women and women-identifying people of colour through my lens, and those of my peers, with tones of reflection, empowerment and triumph.
Notorious & Noble is significant not only to my personal growth but also to my growth as an artist, as it highlights my lived experiences as a young Black woman, born and raised in Canada from immigrant parents, within Caribbean culture. The duality of my upbringing has left me feeling displaced for a long time, not being fully accepted as a true Canadian nor as a Caribbean. Through this self-discovery journey, I have created art that sounds and feels as unique as my lived experience. The intent is to unify people of the African and Caribbean diaspora all over the world, providing room for acceptance in western society through education and appreciation of our differences."
The reggaeton-hip-hop inspired female empowerment anthem, Poblano compares one’s confidence to the heat of a poblano pepper. Featuring international artist, Vicky R, and Toronto's Melxdie, and produced by longtime collaborator, Taabu, the track explores multiple languages including English, Jamaican patois, French and Spanish.
“Taabu sent me this fire beat and I started fleshing out the bones of the song but it was still missing some elements," says Mighty. "The song really started coming together when Vicky R and I got in the studio last year, during her visit to Toronto. Then I wanted to add some authentic spice and hooked up with Mel when she was in town. After that, Poblano was born!”
Switching from Jamaican patois, sultry vocals and an energetic rap flow with confidence, Omega's eclectic sound continues to captivate listeners, following Notorious & Noble's previously released tracks:
Gi Dem, Badgirl Workout , Temporary Baby and Runaway.
Mighty will celebrate the release of Notorious & Noble with a live performance at Toronto's Drake Underground on October 4, where she will perform the new album, along with special guest DJ Shannyn Hill and Denise Deion. Tickets are available here.
