Recorded at the National Music Centre in Calgary, Alberta, the future funk duo explored a new realm of sonic possibilities through the studio’s extensive instrument and technology collection to craft the outer-space concept album.
Working closely with longtime collaborators Ravi Poliah and Marvin “The Fly” Kee, lead singer Yolanda Sargeant says:
“We had the opportunity to use some of the vintage instruments in their vast collection. We wanted to create something unique and interesting that doesn't adhere to a specific time or place. I think the aim with all of our music is to create something original and timeless. We just got to experiment. We wore lab coats. We were scientists”.
In early March 2023, the Alberta music community was shaken to hear of the passing of Marvin “The Fly” Kee. Featured on every track of the album, Marvin’s artistic ability and influence weaves through the spaces that Lo Fi Future explores.
"Marvin was a multi-instrumentalist who could play any genre of music. When Marvin was around, anything was possible. He didn’t have an ego. And he was so open-minded. He included everyone and would always give a new idea a chance. He wanted to show us humans a better way to be. When Marvin passed away it was a new moon. Marvin – he got called on a space mission. We will be reunited when we get there".
