SHEDJS: What initially sparked your passion for DJing, and how did you get started in the music scene?
I've always loved all kinds of music and grew up listening to country, pop, and oldies. There was a time in my life when I could never have imagined myself becoming a DJ, but in my late teens, I started getting more into electronic and dance music, ultimately leading me to the rave scene. Once I delved into raving and became more interested and involved in the dance community, it felt like a natural progression to pick up DJing. It was around '99 when I got turntables and started collecting records, beginning with hard house and then expanding to funk and breaks. I would spend every waking hour teaching myself how to DJ, listening to my records, and practicing mixes over and over. Eventually, I met a couple of other girls, Esette and DJ Adrenacrone, and we formed our DJ collective, Girls On Decks
SHEDJS: Can you share a memorable experience from one of your performances or events that stands out in your mind?
I have been truly blessed in this DJ life of mine and have had countless memorable experiences, but one that stands out to me is
when I was asked a second time (in 2023) to DJ SMF Fractal Forest and when I was standing in the booth with the other DJ, preparing for my set. I took a deep breath and looked up. Thousands of people were dancing in front of me, and it truly took my breath away. I thought, 'How lucky am I?'
It felt like I had come full circle, remembering 20 years prior—my first Shambhala and first time in the Fractal Forest, the first time truly hearing breaks outside of my bedroom. Right then and there, I made it a life goal that I would be invited to play this stage one day, and to actually achieve it, not just once but twice, stands out.
SHEDJS: How do you approach creating a setlist or choosing tracks for a particular event or venue?
As an open-format DJ, my setlists can vary widely depending on the gig. For diverse events, I often have a mix of genres, making my setlists quite eclectic. However, when hired for a specific genre, like breaks, I dive into my collection, searching for songs I currently love or those with nostalgic memories attached. I build my set around that vibe. My digital library is organized in a way that makes it easy to find the right tracks, allowing me to wing it about 95% of the time.
SHEDJS: Are there specific genres or artists that have had a significant influence on your style?
As someone whose closest friends are all house DJs, my music naturally carries a house flavor, but I consistently remain true to my breakbeat roots when the occasion calls for it. My style is ever-changing as I evolve as a DJ, enjoying the versatility to play house, funk, hip-hop, and even Taylor Swift, adapting to the vibe of each event. On the breakbeat side, my enduring influences come from DJ Icey, Krafty Kuts, Deekline, and Stanton Warriors, while I also draw inspiration from newer talents like Franky Wah, The Blessed Madonna, Lady Wax, Esette, and the legendary Z-Trip.
SHEDJS: In a constantly evolving industry, how do you stay updated on new music trends and technologies?
I discover new music through various channels, just like everyone else—utilizing social media, exploring record pools, and connecting with other DJs and industry professionals.
SHEDJS: Do you have any advice for aspiring DJs looking to break into the scene or enhance their skills?
Being a successful DJ isn't just about having strong technical skills; it's also a mental game. The journey can be quite lonely, with late nights, long hours, and sometimes challenging conditions dealing with a variety of people. You'll face tests, and if you identify as a minority, you may encounter even more challenges. So, don't give up. You matter, and if you're passionate about being a DJ, you're likely right where you belong.
Take some time for yourself—indulge in a bath, grab a nap, or enjoy a smoothie. Prioritize self-care as part of your routine and never stop practicing. Remember, your love for music is what makes you a DJ.
SHEDJS: What's next for you in terms of projects, collaborations, or upcoming gigs?
I have a few festival gigs lined up, including pride festivals, and I'll be doing plenty of work with Calgary's new roller rink, House of Skate. Additionally, you'll likely catch me behind the decks at Modern Love sometime soon.
