Who would have thought that at 29 years-young I would be sitting in the eccentric backyard of a Calgary cafe, smoking a legal spliff and discussing business opportunities in cannabis? If Curren$y could see me now. It’s not quite a Verde Terrace, but this garden space, this moment, inspires me like Spitta did when he spoke in rhythmic duality; his bars are laced with business acumen.
Curren$y is my model of the executive level Black stoner, a chief cannabis officer (CCO) if you will. I listen to Ventilation from his Covert Coup album and picture myself as his Elvira, “Twisting that reefer and delivering that dough.” (Curren$y, 2011). Since the October 2017 legalization of recreational cannabis, which now includes edibles, tinctures and more, being a legitimate business person in the seven billion dollar Canadian cannabis industry is possible.
To learn more about running a legitimate small business in cannabis, I recently attended a sesh at Weed Wednesdays, a summer series curated by Toto, at The Dandelion Cafe in Calgary, AB. The talk, The Business of Cannabis was facilitated by a representative of cannabisgreenteam.ca, a Canadian consulting organization on a mission to educate cannabis entrepreneurs.
